Kabbalah Group in SF, Week of May 18, 1995.

Reproduction from Z. ben-Shimon ha-Levi's The Way of the Kabbalah.

This week we continued our explorations of Mother letters shin, mem and aleph, and of the Divine Name Yud, Heh, Vav, Heh. We talked about the word structure of Hebrew (and Arabic) language: most words have a three letter root. It is this root which is most important for Kabbalistic analysis.

We then proceeded to talk about the Names associated with the four aspects of Ha-Shem, the Name: Yud, also means Hand; Heh, Breast; Vav is Ba'al or Master. The Name can be arranged on the Tree of Life thus:

Another arrangement is one in which all the letters are along the middle, excepting Da'at, of course. This middle set of Sefirot is called the Middle Pillar.

We then studied the different temporal properties of the Name. Fist, there is Heyehe meaning what was . Then there is Hoveh, which means the past. In Hebrew, the future is represented as Yehoyeh. Related, the Divine proclaimed Yehe or Let there be , as well as Veyehe , there was at the time of the Creation of the World.

We ended this class with the classification of the Hebrew letters according to their alchemical properties, their gender(m/f) and their numerical values (I will not give the values for the letters at end of words):

  • Water: Mem(m,40), Bet(f,2), Peh(f,80), Tet(f,9), Samekh(m,60), Quph(f,100).

  • Fire: Shin(m/f,300), Khaph(f,20), Resh(m,200), Yud(m,10), Nun(f,50), Ayin(f,70).

  • Air: Aleph(m/f,1), Dalet(m/f,4), Vav(m,6), Zayin(m,7).

  • Earth: Heh(f,5), Tzaddi(f,90), Gimmel(m,3), Chet(m,8), Tav(f,400), Mem(m,40).

  • Finally there is the connecting Lamed
